1. It is interesting to note that our higher education minister has issued a statement that our universities are not dumping ground for the mediocre.
2. The statement seemed to focused on the students and not the academicians or administrators.
3. We admit that for those who aspire to enroll in medicine a minimum grade point average of 3.8 is required. What about other programs? Well, in some universities, the answer is at least 2.0. What about English competency? well, except medicine, band 2 (MUET band; highest 6 and lowest 1)is acceptable? If the students failed in a particular course, can it be rectify? Note: University Sains Islam Malaysia law lecturer has made police report that top university management officers has forced her to inflate her student grades.
4. What about academic staff? Well in year 2010, there will be about 70% with PhD. Can we rest assured that the academic captains (dean and departmental heads) are at least an Associate Professor with PhD then? Or if need be, just appoint a retired professor as a dean so that he/she will not rock the boat to make sure that he will extended and let others suffer.
5. Will the university start its operation at 8 am and close at 4.30 pm? At 8.30am, nobody at the office but you can find them in the canteen having breakfast. Well, is there a university in Malaysia that never sleep? Is there a university library operate at 24 hours a day, seven days a week - at least during study week. If there is one, may be our minister can suggest an award from our prime minister.
6. Well, from my observation, I agree with the minister that university is not a dumping ground but the ministry has to prepare dumping bins. It is like checking email - deleted and ....
